Tracing sediment pathways through the Colombian Caribbean
PhD student Estefany Villanueva-García publishes her first doctoral research paper
PhD student Estefany Villanueva-García has published her first research paper as part of her doctoral project at Heidelberg University. The study, published in the Q1 journal Sedimentary Geology, traces sediment pathways across the Magdalena and La Aguja submarine canyon systems along the northern Colombian Caribbean margin.
By combining detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology with mineralogical and grain-size analyses, the study reveals contrasting sediment sources and shows how their signals remain distinct in proximal canyon systems but converge in the distal Magdalena Submarine Fan. The results provide new insights into sediment routing and provenance mixing along an active continental margin.
