21.04.2026 Plate Tectonics in the Odenwald – Part II
Last Saturday, we successfully carried out another exciting field excursion with our second-semester students: “Plate Tectonics in the Odenwald – Part II.”
More than 40 students actively participated in the excursion and the associated field exercises, working in small groups to investigate key outcrops and develop their own geological interpretations.
The excursion was led by Yamirka Rojas-Agramonte, Francisco Cueto, and Florian Tesch.
Building on the first excursion, students explored the geological evolution of the Odenwald—from subduction-related magmatism to continental collision and post-orogenic processes. The region forms part of theVariscan Orogeny within the Mid-German Crystalline Zone, offering exceptional field examples of crustal evolution and plate tectonic processes .
Through hands-on observations, discussions, and group-based exercises, students connected theoretical concepts from the classroom with real geological features in the field—an essential component of geoscience training.
