Magnetically Shielded Room

The Magnetically Shielded Room (MSR) is a dedicated facility located within room K-004. Measuring 3 × 3 m, the MSR is constructed with two layers of Mu-metal and enclosed by protective vinyl paneling on all sides. This shielding reduces the ambient magnetic field inside the room to approximately 20 nT, providing an ideal environment for high-sensitivity paleomagnetic measurements.

The MSR houses a 2G/Applied Physics Model 855 Superconducting Rock Magnetometer (SRM) equipped with a RAPID sample holder and an in-line alternating field (AF) demagnetizer. Thermal demagnetization experiments are performed using a separate ASC TD-48 thermal demagnetizer located inside the shielded room. The facility is also climate controlled to maintain a stable temperature, ensuring consistent instrument performance and measurement quality.
