Research profile:

My research focuses on a better understanding of the dynamics, driving factors and feedback mechanisms involved in paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental processes especially during the Pliocene and Quaternary. I am particularly interested in (i) reconstructing the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems during the Plio/Pleistocene and Middle Pleistocene Transitions, and past interglacials that may represent analogues for the Holocene; and (ii) deciphering the human impact on natural ecosystems during the past millennia. I am currently generating high-resolution climate records for the eastern Mediterranean region (Tenaghi Philippon, Lake Ohrid, Aegean/Ionian Seas), Central Asia (Qaidam Basin) and SE Africa (IODP Expedition 361). Methodologically, my research is based on the integration of palynological data with sedimentological (particularly varve microfacies), inorganic (XRF-based), organic geochemical, and tephrostratigraphical datasets.
