Cambrian Small Shelly fauna at Manuels River, Conception Bay South, Newfoundland, Canada

A diverse fauna of phosphatised „small shelly fossils“ (SSFs) including brachiopods [Eoobolus priscus (Poulsen 1932) and Vandalotreta djagoran (Kruse 1990)], spicules of hexactinellids, fragments of trilobites and problematica from calcareous and siliceous concretions of the middle Cambrian Manuels River Formation, Conception Bay South of southeastern Newfoundland, Canada, is described. The fauna of the SSFs (studied for the first time at the type locality in the diploma thesis) is partially well preserved, but represents a limited diversity.

Mapping around Manuels River (Master theses at Manuels River and Kelligrews, Conception Bay South, Newfoundland, Canada)

Corresponding with two master theses at Heidelberg University, geological maps of the area around Manuels River were constructed to provide reliable information regarding the lithostratigraphic relations in said area. The geological maps are constrained to the outcrops along the Manuels River and the quarries in Kelligrews.

Agnostoid trilobites from the type locality of the middle Cambrian (Series 3, Drumian) Manuels River Formation, Newfoundland, Canada

Agnostoid trilobites from the type locality of the middle Cambrian (Series 3, Drumian) Manuels River Formation, Newfoundland, Canada, are described systematically. The fauna consists of 1408 specimens, collected bed-by-bed. The taxa are assigned to the suborders Agnostina and Eodiscina, families Peronopsidae, Ptychagnostidae, Condylopygidae and Eodiscidae, genera Peronopsis Hawle and Corda, 1847, Hypagnostus Jaekel, 1909, Ptychagnostus Jaekel, 1909, Tomagnostus Howell, 1935, Pleuroctenium Hawle and Corda, 1847, and Eodiscus Hartt in Walcott, 1884, and the species Peronopsis fallax (Linnarsson, 1869), Peronopsis scutalis (Hicks, 1872), Hypagnostus parvifrons (Linnarsson, 1869), Ptychagnostus punctuosus (Angelin, 1851), Ptychagnostus affinis (Brøgger, 1879), Ptychagnostus atavus (Tullberg, 1880), Tomagnostus fissus (Lundgren in Linnarsson, 1879), Tomagnostus perrugatus (Grönwall, 1902), Pleuroctenium granulatum (Barrande, 1846) and Eodiscus punctatus (Salter, 1864b).

Sedimentology of the Manuels River Formation, Newfoundland, Canada

A detailed bed-by-bed study of fossiliferous, marine, grey to black shales of the middle Cambrian (Series 3, Drumian) Manuels River Formation along its type locality in Newfoundland, Canada, was carried out and provides insight into the sedimentology, depositional environment, palaeogeography and climatology of the area. The formation was deposited on the microcontinent Avalonia, the largest terrane of the peri-Gondwanan realm situated in temperate latitudes. The partly organic-rich (up to 3.36 % TOC) shales of the succession were deposited mainly conformably under dysoxic conditions. Deposition was controlled by two shallowing trends and occurred below, near and above mean storm wave base.

Trilobites of Branch and Kelligrews, Newfoundland, Canada

The well preserved fauna of the fineclastic rocks of the middle Cambrian (Series 3) Chamberlain’s Brook Formation from three outcrops of the Avalon peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada is described. The present thesis is focused on two trilobite genera, Solenopleura (Angelin, 1854) and Ctenocephalus (Hawle and Corda, 1847), and the trace fossil Cruziana (d’Orbigny, 1842). The preservation of the studied trilobites is extraordinary, some specimens are undeformed and show a three-dimensional preservation.

Stratigraphic framework and accessory mineral U-Pb geochronology of Lower Palaeozoic igneous rocks, Newfoundland, Canada

Pillow lavas and mafic tuffs on the western Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, are intercalated in fossiliferous Cambrian sedimtary rocks of the Chamberlain's Brook and Manuels River Formations, and probably also the Elliot Cove formation. An indirect radiometric dating was aimed for by correlating the volcanic rocks with their feeder pipes, the gabbroic to monzonitic Spread Eagle Intrusive Complex (SEIC). Baddeleyite and zircon from the SEIC and the Cape St. Mary's sills which intrude into Cambrian sedimentary rocks, were dated with Secondary Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (SIMS).
