Forschungsschwerpunkte:

Die Entschlüsselung der Triebkräfte der Klimavariabilität ist angesichts einer immer stärker anthropogen beeinflussten Welt von größter Bedeutung. Mit meiner Forschung möchte ich die aktuelle Debatte über den Klimawandel aus einer Paläo-Perspektive vorantreiben, um neue Erkenntnisse über die Rückkopplungen im Klimasystem der Erde zu gewinnen. Dabei konzentriere ich mich insbesondere auf die Rückkopplungen zwischen Ozean und Atmosphäre, und deren Auswirkung auf den globalen Monsunregengürtel, in dem fast zwei Drittel der Weltbevölkerung leben. Die starke saisonale und interannuelle Variabilität der Monsunniederschläge macht diese Gebiete sehr anfällig für klimatische Veränderungen - daher ist es von entscheidender Bedeutung, die Faktoren zu verstehen, die die räumlich-zeitliche Variabilität des Monsuns bestimmen. Der Blick in die Erdgeschichte ermöglicht es, die Klimadynamik der Vergangenheit unter verschiedenen Randbedingungen zu untersuchen, was dringend benötigte Erkenntnisse über die Empfindlichkeit des tropischen Hydroklimas liefert. Meine Forschungsprojekte umfassen daher verschiedene Zeiträume, die vom spättriassischen "Mega-Monsun" über das eozäne Treibhausklima und die plio-/pleistozäne Eishauswelt bis zum Anthropozän reichen.

Zur Gewinnung von Paläo-Umweltinformationen kombiniere ich sedimentologische (Korngröße, Modellierung von Endmembern), geochemische (XRF-Scanning), mineralogische (XRD) und mikropaläontologische Methoden (Mg/Ca-Paläothermometrie, Ba/Ca als Proxy für Flusswasser) an marinen und terrestrischen Sedimentarchiven.

 

 

Laufende Projekte:

 

1. Der Südamerikanische Monsun während des Pleistozäns und Holozäns

Der Südamerikanische Monsun liefert den Großteil des jährlichen Niederschlags über dem (sub)tropischen Südamerika, doch seine Variabilität und Sensitivität gegenüber klimatischen Störungen sind bisher nicht gut erforscht. Um die Triebkräfte zu untersuchen, die das südamerikanische Monsunsystem beeinflussen (z.B. Sonneneinstrahlung, atmosphärische CO2-Konzentrationen, Ozeanzirkulation), verwende ich Sedimentkerne, die während der R/V METEOR Expedition M125 im März/April 2016 vor der Küste Ostbrasiliens gewonnen wurden. Diese Kerne wurden in der Nähe von Flussmündungen entnommen und ermöglichen Einblicke in das kontinentale Hydroklima sowie in ozeanische Veränderungen auf verschiedenen Zeitskalen - von orbital gesteuerten Klimaveränderungen der letzten 900.000 Jahren bis hin zu hochauflösenden Aufzeichnungen, die den anthropogenen Einfluss auf die Bodenerosion im Hinterland beschreiben.

 

2. Taiwanesische Seesedimente: Ostasiatischer Monsun und Taifun-Variabilität (Co-PI)

Der ostasiatische Monsun sichert zum Einen den Lebensunterhalt von mehr als 1,5 Milliarden Menschen, stellt aber auch eine große Naturgefahr dar, da es häufig zu sintflutartigen Überschwemmungen kommt, ein Risiko, das durch das häufige Auftreten von starken Taifunen noch verstärkt wird. Die Faktoren, die für die Variabilität von Monsun und Taifunen in Ostasien verantwortlich sind, sind jedoch bisher nur unzureichend erforscht. Im Rahmen eines vom DAAD geförderten Studentenaustausches werden Seen im taiwanesischen Hochland als Archive für holozäne Sturmaktivität und monsunale Niederschlagsvariabilität untersucht. Da der Tourismus ein zunehmender Wirtschaftsfaktor im unberührten taiwanesischen Hochland ist, gilt ein weitere Augenmerk den möglichen anthropogenen Einflüssen auf die Landschaftsentwicklung.

 

3. Klima- und Menschheitsgeschichte im Mittelmeerraum (Co-PI)

Der Mittelmeerraum liegt im Schnittpunkt von Klimaphänomenen der mittleren und niedrigen Breiten (d. h. Westwinde und der nordafrikanische Monsun) und war Zeuge der Entstehung der ersten hoch entwickelten menschlichen Zivilisationen. Obwohl die frühen mediterranen Gesellschaften während des gesamten Holozäns in enger Wechselwirkung mit ihrer Umwelt standen, ist bisher unklar, inwieweit Klima- und Umweltveränderungen für ihren Aufstieg und Niedergang verantwortlich waren. Insbesondere der Beginn, das frühe Ausmaß und die Folgen des anthropogenen Wandels in terrestrischen und vor allem marinen Ökosystemen sind bisher nur unzureichend geklärt. Diese Fragen werden mit Sedimentmaterial angegangen, das während der R/V METEOR-Fahrt M144 im Dezember 2017/Januar 2018 geborgen wurde. Die geborgenen Sedimentkerne aus der Ägäis und der Adria stellen ein ideales Archiv dar, um die Umweltveränderungen an Land und im Ozean zu entschlüsseln. Integraler Bestandteil dieses Projekts ist die Zusammenarbeit mit Experten der Archäologie und Vorgeschichte der Universität Heidelberg.

 

4. Variabilität des Mittelmeerausstromwassers

Das Verständnis der Variabilität des „Mediterranean Outflow Waters“ (MOW) ist von zentraler Bedeutung, da sein salzhaltiges Wasser eine wichtige Komponente der mittleren thermohalinen Zirkulation im Nordatlantik darstellt. Da das MOW im östlichen Mittelmeer entspringt, ist es außerdem ein wichtiger Indikator für die Stärke des nordafrikanischen Monsuns und damit ein hervorragendes Beispiel für die Untersuchung des möglichen Einflusses von Monsunsystemen auf die globale Ozeanzirkulation. Wissenschaftliche Bohrkerne aus dem Golf von Cadiz, die während der IODP-Expedition 339 geborgen wurden, bieten einzigartige Archive für hochauflösende Studien der MOW-Variabilität während des Plio-/Pleistozäns. Zu diesem Zweck werden sedimentologische und geochemische Methoden eingesetzt, um vergangenen Boden-Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten zu rekonstruieren, die die MOW-Variabilität widerspiegeln.

 

5. Plio-Pleistozäne Variabilität der subtropischen Gyre

Das Plio-Pleistozän ist durch ein anhaltendes Wachstum von Gletscherschilden und eine Verschiebung der interglazialen/glazialen Wechsel von einer 41 kyr zu einer ~100 kyr-Zyklizität vor ca. 900 ka gekennzeichnet. Im Rahmen von zwei Projekten wird untersucht, ob eine starke subtropische Gyre das Wachstum kontinentaler Eisschilde durch einen verstärkten Feuchtigkeitstransport aus mittleren in hohe Breiten begünstigt hat. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem Einfluss der Wärme- und Salzzufuhr durch den MOW auf die Gyrendynamik. Zu diesem Zweck werden Foraminiferen-basierte Rekonstruktionen der oberen Wassersäulenstruktur von den IODP-Sites U1385 (Iberischer Kontinentalhang), U1313 (zentraler Nordatlantik) und ODP-Stätte 1058 (westlicher subtropischer Nordatlantik) über die letzten ~3 Myrs vorgenommen.

 

6. "ENSO-Modoki" auf dem Vormarsch?

Jüngste Beobachtungen haben gezeigt, dass neben der "klassischen" El-Niño/La Niña-Oszillation (ENSO) eine dritte Art von ENSO stärker in den Vordergrund tritt. Während dieser Ereignisse treten SST-Anomalien im zentralen äquatorialen Pazifik auf, was zu wechselnden ENSO-Zuständen führt, die als "El Niño/La Niña Modoki" bezeichnet werden. Eine Folge von ENSO Modoki ist eine verstärkte Erwärmung in den subpolaren Gebieten, die das Schmelzen der Eisschilde in den hohen Breiten beschleunigen könnte. Um die mögliche weitere Entwicklung von ENSO Modoki untersuchen, wird im Rahmen dieses Projektes das Auftreten von ENSO Modoki-ähnlichen Klimazuständen während unterschiedlicher klimatischer Hintergrundzustände untersucht. Zu diesem Zweck werden hochauflösende Proxy-Aufzeichnungen der Variabilität der Meeresoberflächentemperatur an ODP/IODP-Standorten im westlichen, zentralen und östlichen Äquatorialpazifik erstellt, die (i) das mittlere Pleistozän bis zum Holozän und (ii) das frühe Pliozän abdecken.

 

7. Der Messeler Ölschiefer als Archiv eozäner Klimavariabilität (Co-PI)

Dank er anthropogenen Erwärmung bewegt sich das Erdsystem auf Klimazustände zu, für die es in der Geschichte keinen Präzedenzfall gibt. Die Erdgeschichte bietet jedoch mögliche Analogien für die sich erwärmende Welt der kommenden Jahrzehnte, wie etwa das frühe Eozän (~50 Ma). Ein außergewöhnliches Sedimentarchiv zur Untersuchung der Klimavariabilität im frühen bis mittleren Eozän stellen die Maarsedimente der Grube Messel dar. Messel zwar ist berühmt für seine außergewöhnlich gut erhaltenen Tier- und Pflanzenwelt, seine Sedimente stellen allerdings weiterhin ein einzigartiges Archiv für die kurzfristige Klimadynamik während der geologisch jüngsten Treibhausperiode dar. In diesem Projekt werden geochemische Daten durch hochauflösendes XRF-Scannen des Messeler Bohrkerns FB2001 gewonnen, um die hydrologische Variabilität in dekadischer bis maximal jährlicher Auflösung zu entschlüsseln.

 

8. Gab es "Hyperthermale" in der Oberkreide? (Co-PI)

Das Hauptziel dieses Projekts ist es, das Vorkommen oder Fehlen so genannter "Hyperthermale" im der Maastricht zu untersuchen. Hierfür werden an zwei Bohrkernen aus dem Nordatlantik bzw. Pazifik Paläoklima-Datenreihen (Mg/Ca-basierte SST, XRF-Scanning) über den Zeitraum 67-68,5 Ma generiert. Die hochauflösenden Aufzeichnungen werden einen detaillierten Einblick in die Kontrollmechanismen des Treibhausklimas ermöglichen und stellen somit einen Test dar, ob Hyperthermale als Analoga zum Verständnis der zukünftigen Klimaerwärmung herangezogen werden können.

 

9. Die späte Trias im Deutschen Becken: "Mega-Monsun" und Zyklostratigraphie

In diesem Projekt werden spättriassische Playa-Ablagerungen aus dem Gipsmergel-Keuper im Südwesten Deutschlands mittels Faziesanalysen und Reflektanzmessungen untersucht, um die Faktoren zu ermitteln, die den so genannten "Mega-Monsun" in weiten Teilen des (sub)tropischen Pangäas beeinflussten. Neben paläoklimatischen Fragen (z.B. nach der Rolle der paläogeographischen Konfiguration für die Stärke des Mega-Monsuns) werden astrochronologische Methoden eingesetzt, um die immer noch umstrittene Stratigraphie der späten Trias des Germanischen Beckens besser einzugrenzen.
